Moving, as I watch on.

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Sometimes, my behavior can get on the nerves of people. I love lazing around, especially, when assigned a task. I wouldn’t particularly regard it as an asset of my character, but it is rather unique of me (I really don’t know why I say this, as every other friend of mine, claims to laze around).

Hence, sticking to the above statement of mine, I woke up late, the day we were to move to a new house. My dad asked me to pack my stuff into the cardboard boxes which had been stacked in a corner of my room. I ignored his pleas as usual, stepped out of bed, and slid directly into my computer. 2 new updates from facebook and a couple of emails. I checked them out. One of the emails was something to do with moving. Hence, I thought exploring it would be of help. At least, I could boast of something when my dad narrated the incident to his friends and relatives! Clicking on it, it took me to a page, which captioned as moving companies in Las Vegas. Whoa! If I could move into that city, it would be paradise forever.

‘Get yourself together and start packing’, one of dad’s moronic calls. Seriously, I hate being a rebel, but I always end up being one. I glanced at my watch, time for a snack. As I made my way into the kitchen, I saw mom helping the moving service people, with cardboard cartons into a huge truck. I looked around the kitchen; it did not look like one anymore. However, my task was accomplished, as there was an opened box of cereal and a carton of milk. I just took plain cereal and shoved some into my mouth. Suddenly, something snatched the box away from me. No prizes for guessing the villain here. Dad of course!

Resolutions or Jus’ Joking?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

New Year resolutions. Now what are they? It has always hit me before, as to the meaning behind these. I mean, people follow them for a couple of weeks, and bam! Out it goes through the window. This time around, I was literally forced to take a resolution. ‘Take a resolution or I won’t talk with you!’ emotional blackmail from my girlfriend. She was a staunch believer in these bullshit ideas and I was to be yours faithful to her following what she thought was good for us. ‘I just don’t see the point! Why take one, when I bloody well know I am not going to follow it!’ I argued. My words had left her blank. Hence, moving into damage control mode, I took one instantaneously. ‘I will not hire the moving services when I move into my new home this year!’ My girlfriend was delighted on hearing this. She hugged me and reassured me, that it was one resolution that I would honor, come what may.

The time in the year had come for the moment of truth. I switched off my cell phone, to avoid her calls. But, nevertheless, she turned up at my door to see me move ‘all by me’. There was a pamphlet of Miami movers lying on the coffee table in my living room. She picked it up, tore it into bits and pieces and dumped them in the bin. I was helpless, I had no prior experience of moving. All I knew about moving was from seeing my uncle move once. You needed cardboard boxes. But, I had crates instead. Empty beer crates! Looking at my dismal efforts to move, I bent low on my knees and pleaded to her, a second time now, as the first was when I proposed to her. She laughed, picked up the phone and threw it to me! Screw resolutions!

The process of moving.

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

If there was one thing in this world my wife loved doing, it was moving into a new home. I did not find the source of fun from such a tedious process. But, this was something which my wife relished doing. Sometimes, I had even wondered if she had married me, for the love she had for me, or due to the fact that I was regularly on the move, as my job required so. Hence, here we go. One more of those bad days, when I had to move out of my house, into a new one. This was the 8th time, I was moving. But in a way, I did enjoy the fact of my wife’s craze for this process. It saved me bills on paying for moving services. I also loved watching her at work. She used to get the boxes herself, label them, stack up the things and divide them amongst the boxes like a card dealer in a casino at Vegas! Sometime I also wondered if my wife needed to sign up as a ‘home movers expert consultant’ so as give people quality advice on moving.

So, back to business. It was move number 8, and my wife was at her usual best. ‘Can you get me the boxes from the lawn?’ she asked me. I shrugged assuring her in the affirmative and moved towards the lawn. However, on reaching the place, I found the neighborhood kids fiddling with a baseball and a glove. I walked up to them, ‘Hey boys. No one to play around with eh?’ the boys looks suggested their boredom. I grabbed the glove, picked up the ball and chucked a few throws at the boys, attempting to play catch with them. ‘Stuart! Are the boxes there?’ a howl from my living room.

Monday, January 4th, 2010

When you move, you move with a mind to take at ease, whatever crops up. Even if that means losing some of your precious stuff. Now, my experience with moving wasn’t a particularly memorable one. I had taken the day off from work, and it was a loss of pay. Strike one. Due to pending […]

Moving and Me.

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

My title is a true story. It’s a tragic beginning but ends on a happy note. I firmly believed, moving was nothing more than dumping goodies onto a large truck, driving it to your new location, and unloading. Little did I realize that this applied to only construction site raw materials! Hence, when I had […]
