Relocation Services – Make Sure They Are Not CopyCats

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Copycat relocation services are proliferating across the country, so before you start dealing with any of them, make sure they are the real companies. Check that the web sites you are surfing are the ones run by the real companies.

In California, a moving company called Bekins Moving & Storage is being investigated by the California Public Utility Commission for alleged extortions. A rising number of customers have been complaining that the firm has been holding furniture and households goods to extort money from customers.

According to investigators, Bekins Moving has been riding on the coattails of Bekins Van Lines, a pioneer mover based in Chicago and among the most reputable moving companies in the U.S. based on customer surveys and on moving industry association awards.

Copycat Bekins Moving has also run under different names, including BET Transportation, BGT Transportation and BMS Moving & Storage.

The phone number used by Bekins Moving is also used by another copycat company called Stevens Moving & Storage, which is also obviously riding on the reputation of another recognized and established moving company Stevens, which is based in Michigan.

Based on initial investigation results, Stevens Moving has been using other company names, giving the impression that they are different relocation services. These names include Stevens Relocation, CHS Transportation, We Are Moving Relocations, Express Moving, We Are Moving and Storage and Better Way to Move Moving and Storage.

Observers also noticed that the copycat sites, namely bekinsmove.com and stevensmove.com, display videos produced by a company called Mover One which is owned by United Van Lines Canada Limited, a competitor to Bekins Van Lines.

The copycat websites also display the association logos of the Better Business Bureau and the American Moving and Storage Association, a kind of deception increasingly used by fraudulent companies in the country.

So, if you are looking for a relocation or moving company in your state, visit the AMSA web site moving.org and verify if the company you are considering is a ProMover. Make sure that the name on the AMSA list is exactly the same as the one you are negotiating with because copycats have become extremely savvy in confusing customers with the use of company names.

The ProMover program of AMSA works with federal agencies and state governments to prevent unethical business practices and helps customers choose the best moving firm out of a large number of relocation services.

I never knew that shifting was so tough

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Working in the capacity of the chief executive of a leading multinational company has its benefits. I was blessed to have such a job that paid for my house and also for my gardener and chauffeur. The only downside to it was that I had to change homes on a frequent basis. Till now there were no problems for me and I never even knew what moving services were all about. I was a happy go lucky bachelor and my home contained but the barest necessities of life. The fact is that I have shifted homes nearly 6 times and on each occasion the trailer car (provided to me by the company) was more than sufficient to haul my belongings from one city to the other.

A couple of months ago I got married. I knew that the girl I was marrying was methodical, but I never knew that being methodical meant having so many pieces of furniture in the house. My inflating bed was relegated to one corner of the attic and it was replaced by a huge double bed. My better half seems to have a fascination for furniture. Before I knew of it, every room was outfitted with new furniture and a couple of cupboards were also installed. I guess I better check out that paper where I had noticed the details of the moving company. If I know my boss well enough, it will not be long before I have to shift to another abode. This time my trailer shall not be adequate for our shifting purposes. I have no other option that to request the services of some local moving services.

How moving services saved my day

Monday, December 21st, 2009

The fault was not of my making. I had promised my boss that I would join the new office located in a different city from the first of next month. That deadline was looming closer and I just had a week more of spare time before I had to report at the new office. Initially I had thought that moving household goods from one location to another was quite simple. All I required were some helping hands that would pick up my goods on a hired van. It was not as easy as I found out to my dismay. However, a friend of mine suggested that I try out a moving company. They were the correct persons for the job and that they would be able to do it within my time schedule.

Keeping these things in mind, I checked out the local yellow pages and noted down the details of a few home movers. They all assured me that they would be able to shift my goods to my new abode in another city in just 4 days. I finally entrusted my job to them and took out the next flight to the other city. I had hardly settled myself when the bell rang. It was the 3rd afternoon since I had arrived at the new city. A surprise greeted me when I opened the door. The folks of the moving company had arrived. They had assured me that they would shift my goods in 4 days, but they actually managed to complete the task in just 3.
