Sometimes, my behavior can get on the nerves of people. I love lazing around, especially, when assigned a task. I wouldn’t particularly regard it as an asset of my character, but it is rather unique of me (I really don’t know why I say this, as every other friend of mine, claims to laze around).

Hence, sticking to the above statement of mine, I woke up late, the day we were to move to a new house. My dad asked me to pack my stuff into the cardboard boxes which had been stacked in a corner of my room. I ignored his pleas as usual, stepped out of bed, and slid directly into my computer. 2 new updates from facebook and a couple of emails. I checked them out. One of the emails was something to do with moving. Hence, I thought exploring it would be of help. At least, I could boast of something when my dad narrated the incident to his friends and relatives! Clicking on it, it took me to a page, which captioned as moving companies in Las Vegas. Whoa! If I could move into that city, it would be paradise forever.

‘Get yourself together and start packing’, one of dad’s moronic calls. Seriously, I hate being a rebel, but I always end up being one. I glanced at my watch, time for a snack. As I made my way into the kitchen, I saw mom helping the moving service people, with cardboard cartons into a huge truck. I looked around the kitchen; it did not look like one anymore. However, my task was accomplished, as there was an opened box of cereal and a carton of milk. I just took plain cereal and shoved some into my mouth. Suddenly, something snatched the box away from me. No prizes for guessing the villain here. Dad of course!

New Year resolutions. Now what are they? It has always hit me before, as to the meaning behind these. I mean, people follow them for a couple of weeks, and bam! Out it goes through the window. This time around, I was literally forced to take a resolution. ‘Take a resolution or I won’t talk with you!’ emotional blackmail from my girlfriend. She was a staunch believer in these bullshit ideas and I was to be yours faithful to her following what she thought was good for us. ‘I just don’t see the point! Why take one, when I bloody well know I am not going to follow it!’ I argued. My words had left her blank. Hence, moving into damage control mode, I took one instantaneously. ‘I will not hire the moving services when I move into my new home this year!’ My girlfriend was delighted on hearing this. She hugged me and reassured me, that it was one resolution that I would honor, come what may.

The time in the year had come for the moment of truth. I switched off my cell phone, to avoid her calls. But, nevertheless, she turned up at my door to see me move ‘all by me’. There was a pamphlet of Miami movers lying on the coffee table in my living room. She picked it up, tore it into bits and pieces and dumped them in the bin. I was helpless, I had no prior experience of moving. All I knew about moving was from seeing my uncle move once. You needed cardboard boxes. But, I had crates instead. Empty beer crates! Looking at my dismal efforts to move, I bent low on my knees and pleaded to her, a second time now, as the first was when I proposed to her. She laughed, picked up the phone and threw it to me! Screw resolutions!

If there was one thing in this world my wife loved doing, it was moving into a new home. I did not find the source of fun from such a tedious process. But, this was something which my wife relished doing. Sometimes, I had even wondered if she had married me, for the love she had for me, or due to the fact that I was regularly on the move, as my job required so. Hence, here we go. One more of those bad days, when I had to move out of my house, into a new one. This was the 8th time, I was moving. But in a way, I did enjoy the fact of my wife’s craze for this process. It saved me bills on paying for moving services. I also loved watching her at work. She used to get the boxes herself, label them, stack up the things and divide them amongst the boxes like a card dealer in a casino at Vegas! Sometime I also wondered if my wife needed to sign up as a ‘home movers expert consultant’ so as give people quality advice on moving.

So, back to business. It was move number 8, and my wife was at her usual best. ‘Can you get me the boxes from the lawn?’ she asked me. I shrugged assuring her in the affirmative and moved towards the lawn. However, on reaching the place, I found the neighborhood kids fiddling with a baseball and a glove. I walked up to them, ‘Hey boys. No one to play around with eh?’ the boys looks suggested their boredom. I grabbed the glove, picked up the ball and chucked a few throws at the boys, attempting to play catch with them. ‘Stuart! Are the boxes there?’ a howl from my living room.

When you move, you move with a mind to take at ease, whatever crops up. Even if that means losing some of your precious stuff. Now, my experience with moving wasn’t a particularly memorable one. I had taken the day off from work, and it was a loss of pay. Strike one. Due to pending files, and a burgeoning schedule of meetings with the bosses, I was clearly expected not to take an off anytime this month, but it so happened that I did. So next day at work, meant dealing with an angry boss. Do they still sell those polka dotted ties, which can soothe down your boss? Anyways, I was here, and so were my stuff spread around me.

Sometimes, it occurred to me why one needed to pack while moving. Home movers did a fantastic job, no doubt. But, why pack? I mean, when all you were going to do was unpack! My logic can go awry many a time, as I lose my sense of mind more than quite often these days. Blame it on my cubicle and the insane presence of files in it. Well, I did not have all day, but still, to make it a last minute affair, I decided to take a nap, and yes, as usual before that, the usual hourly check of the mail. Yes, a howler from the boss. Transferred it to the Spam folder. Next, a mail concerning moving. I had registered in a couple of sites to get tips on moving into a new house. But they were sending me offers from Austin movers instead! ‘Nice Tip’ I shrugged, shut down my baby, (sorry! I call my Mac as baby) and dozed off on the couch. ‘Brrrr’ my phone vibrated its entire might, only to find the lazy me pick it in slow-mo. Oops! Time to move…

Off late, I have been seeing some promos on television with a caption of ‘Move on’. When I saw the posters in the streets, I wondered if it had anything to do with moving services. Finally, I discovered that it was a promotional campaign for watches and shades of a famous brand.

Moving on is not a task as easy as it sounds. ‘Move On’ in those promos were in relation to the break up of a relation between guys and gals, and that, they needed to ‘Move On’, wearing those watches and shades. It was attempted at the teens and the age group of 16-25. This was obviously their target audience. But, coming back to my topic, moving on, is a task which is complicated. The mind battles with itself on leaving sometime, so dearly loved. Tears flow, and finally, they decide to break up as the relation seems to struggle, and is no longer smooth. When I discussed this with my friend, he laughed over it. He exclaimed, “Even I thought the promos were for movers of houses!” He continued, “See. I have broken up, and ‘moved on’, its no big deal dude!”. Maybe it wasn’t a big deal after all. I had not committed myself to a girl so far, and hence, maybe thought it was all a big deal and stuff. But I sincerely believed this was the way things worked. That people, who at least claimed who loved each other, did not really want to part. My friend had a bad experience with his girl, and he got over it. He seemed perfectly normal to me. The promos still air on the television screens. Even advertisements have been made on them. I still wonder when I see them, is it really not a ‘big deal’ or is that, just a phrase to console each other, and heal the wounds of ‘moving on’?

It was a hectic day at work. My team had decided to send me on official work to Denver. It was weird hearing this, as I had lived all my life at Phoenix. However, work called for and I had no option but to accept it. Of course, this inversely meant that it called for shifting my home. I hated shifting my home. I couldn’t call it an OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), but it was the way I was made. I liked the way things were and wasn’t an enthusiastic participant to change, leave alone it being good or bad!

‘You report there a week from now’, my boss informed me with a cheer. Looked like he was a man on Cloud Nine now, as he was getting rid of me! I needed help. When I told I had lived all my life at Phoenix, I meant it. I did not know much of the other cities. With a multitude of questions popping up in my mind, I took off from the office. I had a week’s time off to settle myself in the city of Denver. ‘Movers… Movers.. Movers…’ I mumbled, munching my way into a burger, as I browsed the various options available for a person who needed to move. Finally my eyeballing stopped at this site. Movers from many cities in the US had registered with this site to offer their services, and also avail them online if required! I scrolled my way down to Movers in Phoenix. The Mover’s booking page had a variety of plans. There were also columns for express plans. I booked a mover and looked up at the clock. That had taken hardly a few minutes, and half my woes were solved. I went to the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee, sat back, and enjoyed a late night TV show.

My title is a true story. It’s a tragic beginning but ends on a happy note. I firmly believed, moving was nothing more than dumping goodies onto a large truck, driving it to your new location, and unloading. Little did I realize that this applied to only construction site raw materials! Hence, when I had my shot at moving my home to another spot in Denver, these thoughts ran through my mind. It seemed as easy as scooping ice cream from its tub. But, it wasn’t. Things took a turn for the worse, when I dropped my crystal vase. I hate seeing stuff getting smashed into smithereens, especially when you see that it all contained a tiny bit of your income! Neighbors, friends, couple of guys walking down the street, all of them tried their expert advice and efforts at guiding me shift. But, in vain. I looked up the directory for movers in Denver. Mover this, Mover that… Some phone numbers were obsolete as I hung the call on a wrong number. This was getting hectic. I needed a break. I slipped in front of my PC and browsed for some ideas on moving.

Guidelines, tips, blogs on moving, songs which one could sing while moving as thought it was a voyage etc etc. Nothing seemed to comfort me. Suddenly, it struck me like never before. Movie ticketing had gone online, travel bookings, holiday planning, hotel reservations etc etc, everything, every service had been made available for booking by the common man. Why not Movers in Denver as well? I browsed towards my idea and there it was, a list of moving companies in Denver, with online booking facility. No prizes for guessing what happened next. Moving and Me are close pals now, not to forget the catalysts who made this happen, the internet and the moving companies in Denver!

Although you are excited about relocating to a new city because of a new job, the thought of moving all your things can be overwhelming. It is normal to feel a bit panicky considering the many things you have to do and not to mention the cost you will have to shoulder. In order to organize your move, you might be in serious need of a relocation guide.

One of the things that you should know is that there is no reason for you to do the moving by yourself. You can ask your new employer if they offer relocation assistance and if they do, grab it. If such assistance is on the table for negotiation, here are some tips:

Determine who pays for the cost – it is smart to establish immediately who will be shouldering the relocation bill. The entire cost can vary depending on whether you will be moving to a new house or just renting an apartment. If the company is not willing to shoulder everything, you should consider sharing the bill. This is certainly better than not having any monetary assistance.

Read the fine print – to avoid any confusion, it is important that you read and understand the relocation details. Some employers would simply cover the expenses but you will have to organize and plan all the rest. Also, any cost that exceeded the company’s allocated budget will have to be shouldered by you. On the other hand, there are employers who will do everything for you, from packing to unpacking your things. You can ask the employer for a comprehensive relocation guide in order to give you a clear picture of what you can expect.

Do not be afraid to ask. Keep in mind that most companies offer relocation assistance to senior employees, executives or to someone who has unique experience or skills. But there are instances when the company has difficulties finding a qualified employee from the local pool and would do anything to hire one even if it means having to come up with a relocation guide that involves moving assistance.

While people on the move are concerned about moving safely, they are often wary about spending too much on relocation services. Most people who are thinking of moving are looking for various ways to cut down on costs. While moving is a task that requires both a lot of money and effort, there are measures you can take to lessen your expenses.

One of the first steps you need to take is to rummage through your belongings and filter out which ones you absolutely have to take to your new address. Use this time to begin the process of mentally letting go of your old residence and the memories associated with it. Filter through all the clutter and keep only what is important. You might choose to donate some of your old things to charity, or give them away to friends. Another good idea is selling stuff at a yard sale. This will give you more income and also help shoulder your moving costs.

You can also save money by scrimping on packaging costs. You can choose not to avail of the packing services that moving companies offer. Scout around for empty boxes and storage containers which your neighbourhood stores may have in plenty. These can be used to store virtually anything, and may come in handy for irregularly shaped things. You can save up on packaging supplies by choosing to forego foam peanuts, bubble wrap and other padding. Clothes and linen can do the same job just as well.

Using plastic bags for storing items is also a good alternative. Choose the clear ones so you do not throw anything out by mistake. Label the boxes clearly properly and indicate the contents. This will help the movers in loading the truck, in choosing which boxes to put on the bottom and on the top. This also serves to remind them which boxes to handle with care. Doing this little step is clearly essential to moving safely.

Keep valuables such as your cell phone, wallet, keys, purse and important documents in a safe place. It is best to transport these items yourself, because there may be a chance that these get misplaced or even stolen. Make sure that the movers have all your complete details, and several contact numbers with which to keep in touch with you. You should also have their number on hand. These measures will ensure that everyone can reach each other throughout the entire move.

You should always remember to plan ahead and secure all the little details before proceeding to do the big move. Details such as trailer parking and elevator regulations are important, but often overlooked. Neglecting little things such as these can lead to a disaster –hours wasted, and a lot of inconvenience. Be aware of everything involved in the move, secure this, and then double-check. Making a list of all these helps you keep everything in check.

Relocating is a big step. Often, people have mixed emotions –they are excited and scared at the same time. Planning ahead and some careful preparation not only lessens anxieties but are also the first steps to moving safely and ensuring a hassle-free transition.

Relocating can be a wonderful and exciting experience. However, discovering broken goods or furniture that was damaged during the course of the move can ruin anyone’s good spirits. To make sure that all your precious belongings get to your target destination safe and sound, here are a several guidelines to keep in mind.

The first rule might be basic, but it is also the most important: you should only hire a dependable and reputable moving company. This can spell the difference between disaster or success when you are moving home. Remember that only credible companies have clear rules regarding belongings damaged during transit. Choose a removals company with a good background. Check with the Better Business Bureau to review their past records, and scrutinize the company policies and procedures. A trustworthy moving company should have their license, as well as insurance protecting them against damage, accidents, and other unexpected events that may come up.

Ensure that you get a good range of price estimates. Gather a good number of quotations from several moving companies and do a careful comparison of their services before settling down for the best deal. Scrutinize the services they feature because prices do not necessarily determine which company gives you the most value for your money. Check why some companies quote higher bids than others, and find out if these extra services are worth spending for.

You should always keep a close eye during the packaging process. While some movers just load all the goods in their truck and unload after arrival, other companies pack your belongings and unpack them upon getting to the destination. If the company you hire has a policy of doing the latter, you should monitor them while the packaging occurs. You should never leave things to chance. If the movers are packing up fragile valuables such as china or glassware, see to it that they wrap each piece individually and place them in a well-padded box. If by any chance you have kept the original packaging for any of your items, you should give it to the movers.

If you opt to do the packaging by yourself, check first with the policy of the moving company. Some of them have a rule that they cannot be held responsible for items that have been packed by the owners. Make sure that you verify all the small details before moving home.

You may also wish to document the move itself. Photographing or videotaping all your belongings before you pack is a good idea. This can serve as a record of the possessions you have or the conditions they were previously in just in case you find that an item is lost or damages during the move.

Moving house can be fraught with a lot of complications. However, you can do your best to minimize these with the right precautions. Take charge by doing your moving company research thoroughly. By exercising these safety measures, you can help protect your valuable belongings from the usual risks involved with relocating.
