Off late, I had been noticing a stark change in the environment near my house. No, it wasn’t the withering leaves of autumn, or the excessive smoke from that old Ford pickup! It was the rambling noises and the quarrels from the neighbors. I had been wondering as to what they were up to? Sometimes, I even took my dog, Bruno, for a walk across their plot, to overhear their quarrels. ‘No… We need one! Cant do without it…’ once I heard the lady of the house blow off. One day, as I was leaving for work, Mitchell, the neighbor, came up to me. ‘I need a favor. Could be drop in by our home sometime, to assist us with our moving?’ I finally realized that all the commotion was about the movers.

I accepted his offer, and decided to drop by their place. There are some excellent moving companies in Miami. I had used their services over the last decade a couple of times. Wondered, why the neighbors could not use them, considering the fact that they were moving a good 40 miles away. I dropped into the neighbors that evening, and looked around. The moving had started. Stuffs were strewn around though. It all looked like a bowl of spaghetti, thrown around a room. I went up to Mitch, he looked worried, the reason for which I later discovered was that, he had to report to the office near his new place in a couple of days. I shuffled through my pocket for my wallet and pulled out a card from it.

‘I don’t think I can afford one.’ He exclaimed. I pulled out my Movers Privilege card as well and requested him to use it to avail a 15% off on services. His face lit up and he literally hugged me!

There are occasions when things work out so well for you that it seems that you are riding on the crest of a fortune wave. It was the same with me. A couple of months have passed since I fell in love with this pretty thing from Denver. I never knew that she would change the pattern of my life in such a way. I also did not know that later on our courtship would also involve Denver movers .She had such a cheery and infectious smile that cannot be explained in words. She was extremely smart too. To keep things short, I proposed to her and she was willing to marry me. There was just one request from her side. She did not want me to stay in the seedy locality I was residing in now and wanted me to shift to her place.

The problem is that I just did not have the time or the resources. My office work demanded me to go on an overseas trip within a fortnight. I had planned to take her along with me. This would not be the perfect honeymoon, but by boss was willing to share some f my expenses. But how would I shift home at such short notice? I called up my sweetheart and explained my problems to her. I told you before that she is smart.

She told me about a particular moving company in Denver. They were situated close to me and would manage to shift my belongings to my new abode on schedule. These movers in Denver were extremely efficient and managed the task of moving my goods in just a few days.

It was that day again, which I feared. The day when things were about to go for a toss. The day when my delicate furniture and prized belongings, was about to be cuddled up into one heap and moved to another place. Job posting had changed and so did my home along with it. The last time I shifted, I remember coining one word for it – ‘Chaos’. To be more precise, I had ended up losing 5 cds of my favorite artiste, 1 footstool, 3 pairs of hangars, 8 of my prized comic collection and yeah, spare keys to my car! The thoughts shuffled through my mind like a pack of cards. All I knew was, I needed help.

Shifting a home, was one of those tasks which looked like a cakewalk to begin with, but got increasingly tougher as one got into the thick of it. It needed meticulous planning, which was absent in me right from my cradle. My office cubicle spoke volumes of what I meant in the previous line. It was indeed some work, to keep things in place when moving. Yeah, you had it all in your mind, the cardboard boxes, tapes to seal them, wrapping paper for those curios and antique pieces etc etc. But, it all clumped into a disgusting heap when the moment of truth arrived! Home Movers have been a rescue squadron to these problems. They come as a team, generally dressed in a uniform to show you their commitment to your goods, and work their magic on your goods by shifting them in a systematic way. Moving Services have gone online to let you choose the best deal from the various Movers, available to handle your goods into your new home. This has triggered a never-seen-before competitiveness amidst the movers in the business. Least to mention, your goods are being competed with, to be handled in the most efficient way possible, with you smiling, only to end up paying the best quoted price.

With the increasing foreclosure homes, many are moving out and are unfortunately getting scammed by moving companies. In fact, there were 3,000 consumer complaints filed against interstate movers last year. Read on to help protect your self against these scammers.

Know the scam. A classic scam involves hostage-taking. The company gives an initially low estimate to secure a client, and would later hike up the moving quote when items have already been loaded. The shipment is held hostage until clients pay.

Know your rights. When additional weights or services increase the price of moving, interstate moving services are required by federal law to release belongings once 100 percent of the charges in a binding estimate or 110 percent of a non-binding estimate has been paid. Also, clients should never be asked to pay for upfront deposits. Read the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet which should be provided by the company.

Visit personally. Tim Walker, once-victim of dishonest movers, and who now maintains his own site to guide clients against scammers says that home owners should not hire from the internet. The virtual superhighway is good for research, but face-to-face communication is better in securing a deal.

Ask for referrals. Local real estate agents, friends, and family are the best people to ask for referrals.

Look around. Get a written moving quote from at least three companies. This should be done personally and not over the phone. One may opt for a non-binding estimate which approximates expenses based on the shipment’s weight and other services. Another option is a binding estimate which ensures that the final bill cannot exceed the quoted estimate.

Be open. Discuss essential details about the move with the company representative. Clarify valuation protection and company’s policies on settling claims.

All in all, it pays to be cautious when making a deal with moving companies. Once satisfied with a service however, spread the word and help other home buyers ensure themselves of a stress-free move.
